From chat to first date: meeting in person, safely

Great chat, real spark, and now someone says: "should we meet?" Here is how to say yes without handing your safety to a stranger.
Before you go
- Public place, daytime or early evening. A cafe or bar you know. Never a private home or hotel for a first meeting — whoever insists on one is telling you something.
- Tell a friend. Where, when, with whom. Share your live location if your phone can.
- Plan your own transport. Arrive yourself, leave whenever you want. Do not depend on their car.
- Video chat first. Five minutes of video kills 90% of unpleasant surprises.
During the date
Keep your drink in sight. Keep your phone charged. And keep permission to leave: "this was nice, I have to run" is a complete sentence — you owe no one a second hour.
Calibrate expectations
A first meeting is a vibe check, not a contract. Whatever you discussed in the chat, in person everyone gets a fresh start and a fresh no. The chemistry either survives daylight or it does not — both answers are useful.
